FLINDERS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
Hardy Milazzo was invited to design a collaborative learning hub for the Flinders University Library. The design was to include a Café space to make the library more attractive for after hours use.
After extensive consultation with Library representatives and University staff, it was decided to utilise external lift lobby spaces to form part of the library’s internal book return space and to relocate central office spaces to allow for an open plan layout. These modifications allowed us to create a link from the existing Library entrance to the adjacent Red Vines Restaurant and lift area. This link encourages movement within the building and integrates two buildings on the site.
The design resulted in a clean modern learning space for students to enjoy the technological facilities provided by the Library and also the casual relaxed Café / meeting space.
Finishes used included large ceramic concrete coloured tiles, full height white glass panels to entrances, red glass panels to the Café space, stainless steel trims, new cut pile tiles and an off-white Corian finish for the free flowing Customer Service Desk. The 80m Circulation Desk incorporates student laptop areas, book return spaces, ID Card area, Information, display and staff work areas.
Due to budget restraints existing Library lighting was realigned in a continuous, linear pattern to create fresh new look. New pendant fittings were located at the desk and Café to bring attention to service points.
