Embraced as a local landmark, The Victor Harbor Civic Centre incorporates a Public Library, Council Chambers and Administration Offices to service the demand of the region’s local residents and visitors.
Hardy Milazzo worked closely with Council staff, elected members and the community undertaking an extensive facilities planning study to establish the brief, determine the scope and create a design. The centre comprises a Library, Customer Service Area, public space, administration offices and Council Chambers with a strong emphasis on Environmentally Sustainable Design principles.
The project was hotly debated for 10 years prior to Hardy Milazzo’s involvement. As such there were many community opinions which needed to be taken on board, and sensitivities to be managed, (including Aboriginal artefacts discovered on site).
The library reflects contemporary thinking in library design, to accommodate the existing collections with an emphasis on IT. The public foyer also is community-focussed, flexibly used as gallery, public meeting, social interaction and information space.
The strong relationships developed through the course of design and delivery enabled a very successful design, and a strong sense of ownership in the community.
